ISO 14001:2015

ISO 14001 is an international standard for environmental management systems published by the International Organization for Standardization, which is a core part of the ISO 14000 series of voluntary standards. The currently widely used version is ISO 14001:2015.

1、 Core requirements of the standard
This standard adopts the PDCA (Plan, Implement, Check, Improve) cycle model, with core clauses including organizational environment, leadership role, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation, and improvement. The 2015 version of the standard introduces key changes such as strategic environmental management, lifecycle thinking, and strengthened leadership role of top management, and adopts a high-level structure compatible with other ISO management system standards, which can be used in conjunction with the ISO 9001 quality management system.

2、 New Version Dynamics
The final international standard draft of ISO 14001:2026 was released in January 2026 and is expected to be officially released in April 2026. The main updates of the new standard include: incorporating issues such as climate change response and biodiversity conservation into organizational environmental considerations; Strengthen the lifecycle perspective when determining the scope of the environmental management system; Add structured requirements for ‘planning and management of changes’; Expand the scope of operational control from “outsourced processes” to “externally provided processes, products, and services” to strengthen supply chain management; Performance evaluation requires a clearer assessment of environmental performance and standardization of internal audit objectives and management reviews.

3、 Certification process and conditions
ISO 14001 certification is a conformity assessment activity implemented by third-party certification bodies, applicable to organizations of any size, type, and nature. To apply for certification, the following conditions must be met: no punishment has been imposed by the local environmental protection agency within one year before the application date, and a compliance certificate issued by the environmental protection department must be obtained; Pollutant emissions comply with national or local standards; Establish a documented environmental management system that meets standard requirements and operate effectively for more than three months; Complete internal audits and management reviews. The certification body will conduct document review and on-site audit, and issue a certificate with a validity period of three years after passing. During this period, it is required to undergo supervision and audit every year.
