EN ISO 20471 is a mandatory safety standard for high visibility warning clothing (commonly known as reflective clothing) in the European Union, aimed at ensuring that the wearer can be clearly identified at night or in low visibility environments, thereby reducing the risk of accidents. This standard is a coordinated standard under the framework of the EU Personal Protective Equipment Regulation (EU) 2016/425 and is the core basis for CE certification that products must pass before entering the EU market.
Ⅰ、 Core requirements of the standard
EN ISO 20471 specifies performance requirements for high visibility clothing from three dimensions:
1. Material properties
Background material: Specific chromaticity coordinates and brightness factors are required to ensure sufficient visibility in sunlight.
Reflective material: It must meet strict initial reflective performance requirements, and the reflection coefficient is measured in candela per lux per square meter (cd/lx/m ²).
2. Durability testing
The standard requires reflective materials to maintain their performance even after simulating actual usage scenarios. The main testing items include:
Winding/bending test: Simulate repeated folding during wearing, requiring the reflection coefficient to not be lower than the standard limit after thousands of bending cycles.
Wear resistance test: Evaluate the material’s ability to maintain its performance after continuous friction.
Washing resistance test: simulate whether the reflective performance meets the standard after multiple water washes or dry cleaning.
Weather resistance test: to test the durability of materials under environmental factors such as ultraviolet radiation and temperature changes.
Stain resistance, tear resistance, impact resistance, heat resistance, cold resistance and other tests: comprehensively evaluate the reliability of materials under various extreme conditions.
3. Clothing design and area requirements
The standard divides clothing into three levels based on the visible material area:
Class 1: Minimum visibility level, suitable for low-risk environments.
Class 2: Medium visibility level, suitable for medium risk environments.
Class 3: The highest visual level, suitable for high-risk environments, and must meet the minimum area requirements for both background and reflective materials.
